From your dedication and commitment, to your warm hugs and reassuring smile. Everything you do is an inspiration to us all.We extend our best wishes to all our community’s mothers. Happy Mother’s Day! Sports & Fitness Center sponsored:STRONG B.A.N.D.S. EVENTSWhat has been the most enjoyable aspect of working and living at Fort Buchanan? The people and the mission. I enjoy the feeling of camaraderie and community that exists at Fort Buchanan. For me, the most enjoyable aspect is supporting its population. There is no other higher calling. What was the most valuable lesson you learned as Garrison commander? My main lesson has been that I knew that an Army Aviator’s job is hard to do. However, being an Army Installation Commander is harder. We know that Command leadership has worked tirelessly to improve Fort Buchanan. If you had more time, what more would you try to do?I would love to be here when all the ongoing projects to improve Fort Buchanan are completed. I know that these projects will improve the installation for years to come and it would be an honor to be part of all those ribbon cutting events. Together with our community, you’ve experienced the challenges of going through a major hurricane. What lessons have you learned from that experience, and what advice would you offer your successor? To encourage training exercises that will prepare us for any natural disaster. Flexibility is key; our employees are absolutely the smartest, most versatile and committed force in the Army. You can always trust our people to give their best in a time of adversity. As the new Garrison Commander, what were some of your initial goals and do you feel satisfied with the results? My goal was to find an identity for Fort Buchanan that would resonate Army wide. Now we know that Fort Buchanan is known and has proven itself as the DoD center of gravity in the Caribbean. Living in Puerto Rico for almost two years now, what have you enjoyed the most? The warmth of the Puerto Rican people and their love for music. Also, I find that there is always a reason to go out and enjoy what the island has to offer. As a proven leader, what leadership advice do you have for others? It’s about treating everyone with dignity and respect. It’s also important to understand that we must work as a team to achieve a common goal. On May 31, 2017 COL Bass assumed Command of the Fort Buchanan garrison. His tenure at this installation will soon end as he moves on to new challenges. Family and MWR would like to extend its sincere gratitude for all his support during his time at Fort Buchanan. With this interview we hope to provide a glimpse of his positive impact on our installation.COL Guy D.
