Welcome to Keizer and KeizerFEST! KeizerFest and Keizer Rapids Park – both come from the heart of volunteerism and community. What a natural to put them together for this year’s celebration! Where were YOU in ’82? Keizer voters approved creating this wonderful city in November of 1982 and set about the hard work to create a community based city government. Now, 40 years later, the nearly 40,000 residents still live out our lifestyle and commitment to Pride, Spirit and Volunteerism. Where are we now? After two years of tremendous uncertainty and struggle, we have landed on our feet and are already pushing forward together to help our businesses survive and thrive, support families and children, promote educational achievement for all students, and enhance our parks and our city services to do even more for all our residents and visitors. All summer long, Keizer has great activities for the whole family – summer reading and fun at the Keizer Community Library, arts and theater at Keizer Cultural Center, outdoor recreation in our 19 parks, Mavericks Independent Baseball League action, free concerts at the Keizer Rotary Amphitheater, and more! Now it is time to celebrate all things Keizer at this year’s reimagined KeizerFEST at Keizer Rapids Park! Our favorites like the Pet Parade, KeizerFEST Parade, food and music at the Big Tent, and craft vendors are back, with new attractions in this wide open space at the park. We are ready for you and your family to come and enjoy! We remember ’82. Now let’s look ahead years from now when folks will ask “Where were YOU in ’22!” Let’s celebrate! It is not too farfetched to think that 40 years hence, people will ask, where were you in ’22? Why? Because of the major changes to Keizer’s biggest community event. After being staged for the last few years at the Lions Club on Cherry Avenue, the annual festival has found a permanent home—Keizer Rapids Park. SMI Real Estate and Property Management has signed on as the title sponsor of KeizerFEST for the next 10 years. Their generosity will assure the vitality of the festival for years. For some, Keizer Rapids Park is the perfect place to stage the festival—it has plenty of space to contain all the elements of the event, including parking. How planned amenities at the park will affect future KeizerFESTs is unknown; besides, that’s a discussion for another day. The move to Keizer Rapids Park doesn’t change the featured parts: the Valley Credit Service KeizerFEST parade will still march down River Road from Lockhaven Drive south to Glynbrook Street. It is appropriate that Chet Patterson, one the city’s first councilors was chosen as the Grand Marshal. It connects with the history of Keizer’s earliest days as a full-fledged city. The route for the KeizerFEST 5K and 3K fun runs remain on River Road, participants are encouraged to dress in their best 1980s-themed running apparel. The Mayor’s Pet Parade will continue to start at Creekside Shopping Center (at River Road and Lockhaven Drive.) The KeizerFEST main tent will be where the action will be, from live music to family activities. Beer and wine have always been on the menu at the main tent. This year Oregon Beverage will offer the usual plus adding spirits. The city’s biggest community event has always been a celebration of our city, more so this year, marking its 40th birthday. The historic shifting of the festival from May to August was prompted by the COVID pandemic. With the move to Keizer Rapids Park, it makes sense to keep the festival in August. Unpredictable weather could have resulted in a muddy mess in May. It doesn’t matter when KeizerFEST is held, it matters that it happens and it still celebrates the home we love. The parade route will be the same as last year, going down River Road from Lockhaven Drive to Glynbrook Street N. The assembly area will be on River Road instead of Lockhaven Drive this year, although both streets will be closed to vehicle traffic by 9 a.m. River Road north of Lockhaven Drive will be closed for a block, and Lockhaven Drive will be closed to McClure Street. Parade participants will be competing in a variety of dif- ferent categories, and judging will occur in the assembly area prior to the start of the parade at 10:30 a.m. There will be three auto- mobile categories - Antique (non-modified automobiles built prior to 1955), Classic (non-modified automobiles built since 1955), and a Custom category. Animal participants have four categories in which to compete, Best Mounted Group, Best Rodeo Court, Best Novelty Group, and Best Rodeo Queen. The final category is for Floats and Groups (including marching bands). Honors awarded for this category are the Mayor’s Trophy, Best Use of Theme award, the custom- ary Iris Award (this year’s Iris is named “Firestorm”), a Spirit award, two catego- ries for Most Unique and Most Humorous, and a Commercial Division award. This year’s Grand Marshal is Chet Patterson who – fit- tingly – was one of the first group of leaders elected in Keizer when he assumed position #4 on the brand- new Keizer City Council in January, 1983. “It’s a special honor,” said Patterson about his appoint- ment to lead the parade. “It makes me reflect back on a younger time, with a young family and how we got involved with this city, and reflect back on what I was KeizerFEST parade will celebrate ‘80s nostalgia during city’s 40th birthday Helping Keizer maintain order while promoting safety and freedom and building public confidence. Parking will be avail- able along most of the side streets intersecting the parade route, as well as Eagles Lodge. RV parking is available at the Elks Lodge for Elks members. Parking is expected to be at a pre- mium on both ends of the route, due to the assembly and disassembly areas. Foot traffic is also expected to be the highest near Lockhaven Drive and Glynbrook Drive. Crossing and intersecting streets will gradually reopen after the parade passes through each area.PAGE A8, OFFICIAL GUIDE TO K EIZER FEST , AUGUST 2022 M ix a little exercise in with the fun of KeizerFEST with the KeizerFEST 5K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, Aug. 13.
