The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. at River Road North and Lockhaven Drive North, then rolls south two miles along River Road through Keizer before ending at Glynbrook Drive.Just like last year, one Keizer business is building a float spectators can win. Remodeling by Classic Homes will be pulling a playhouse advertise its services, but it will be auctioning off the playhouse after the parade. The playhouse is modeled after the home from the Pixar movie Up. Tickets are $5 each and will be sold at the KeizerFEST information booth near the entrance to the Lions Club property on Cherry Avenue Northeast. They can also be purchased at Remodeling by Classic Homes, 4195 River Road N., or at the Keizer Chamber of Commerce office, 4118 River Road N. Proceeds from the auction will go to Satellite Gaming, an organization that offers after-school video gaming sessions for students.Other than that, the parade should have a familiar look and feel. Dignitaries will still be riding in Corvettes, grand marshals this year Teresa Munoz, owner of Los Dos Hermanos Restaurant, to honor her years of community service.More than 100 entries typically fill the two-hour parade including Mayor Cathy Clark, Keizer’s First Citizen Vicki Jackson, Merchant of the Year Kyle Juran, Service to Education Award winner Brian Aicher and President’s Award recipient Larry Schmidgall. Also in the parade will be winners of the title of Keizer’s Distinguished Young Women, who will be chosen on May 11. The parade will feature equestrian groups, floats, classic cars and more. The Keizer Police Department will close River Road to traffic at 9 a.m. on parade day. Through traffic will be rerouted on side streets between south Keizer and north Keizer. An estimated 20,000 people watch the parade each year. This year’s theme is Flowers, Family & Fun. The day starts early for those in the parade. The parade check-in and staging areas open at 7:30 a.m., with participants needing to be in place by 8:30 if they want to be judged. There are a number of divisions to be judged. For vehicles there are three categories: antique (non-modified, built prior to 1955), classic (non-modified, 1955 or newer) and custom (modified). Bethell said extra care was taken this year to spread out the automotive entries. You might also see more school-themed entries this year. Chamber leaders offered free entries to every school in the Salem-Keizer School District this time around. “This is the one and only spring parade that happens and we don’t want money to be a barrier to student participation,” said Danielle Bethell, executive director of the Keizer Chamber of Commerce. For floats or groups there are seven awards to compete for: Mayor’s Trophy, Best Use of Theme, Iris Award, Spirit Award, Most Unique, Most Humorous and Commercial Division. There are also four animal categories: Best Mounted Group, Best Rodeo Court, Best Novelty Group and Best Rodeo Queen. There are several rules all parade participants must abide by, with one of them being candy is not allowed to be thrown under any circumstance.MAY 2019, OFFICIAL GUIDE TO KEIZERFEST, PAGE 3Flowers, Family & Funtake spotlight in annual paradeThis year’s KeizerFEST promises to truly have something for everyone. That recognition was one of the main drivers of the KeizerFEST theme this year, Flowers, Family & Fun. And the confl uence of ideas and observations resulted in the fi rst-ever La Familia Day at KeizerFEST on Sunday, May 19. “One of the things that really had a big impact was inviting the McNary High School Latino Club dancers to perform at the First Citizen’s Banquet in January. We had a positive response to the kids and we wanted to do more,” Bethell said. Part of the “more” is keeping the KeizerFEST tent open until 9 p.m. on Sunday featuring Latino performers from 3 to 9 p.m. An adult soccer tournament is scheduled as well. “Carlos Pineda, one of our board members, really pushed for this and connected us with someone else who runs an intramural league,” Bethell said. The opening rounds will be played on Thursday and Friday evening at River Road Park, just south of Keizer. The quarterfi nals, semifi nals and fi nal rounds will be played Saturday and Sunday at McNary in the school’s stadium. The concession stand will be open during the games at McNary and the proceeds will benefi t the Celtic boys and girls soccer programs. “I feel like what we have this year is still a bit low-key, but we have to start somewhere. If we can bring people out, maybe we’ll fi nd the connections to help make it bigger and better,” Bethell said. will celebrate Keizer’s diversityKEIZERTIMES/FileParade attendees frolic in the street as the 2018 KeizerFEST parade passes by.
